Xarelto Lawsuits

Xarelto is an anticoagulant medication. It is taken to prevent blood clots that can lead to serious – potentially fatal – health complications, such as heart attacks and strokes. It can be prescribed to patients with a history of deep vein thrombosis or pulmonary embolism, as well as those who experience rapid heartbeat unrelated to valve problems or atrial fibrillation. In many instances, Xarelto is used on a temporary basis after a person undergoes an operation for knee or hip replacement because those procedures increase the risk for clotting.

Anticoagulant medications generate more than a billion dollars in sales every year, making them one of the most popular prescription medications available today. Since its approval in 2011, Xarelto has become the most prescribed anticoagulant on the market. It is manufactured by Bayer HealthCare and is marketed in the United States by Janssen Pharmaceuticals, a subsidiary of Johnson & Johnson.

Why was Xarelto Considered a Better Option?

Many in the medical community were excited when Xarelto hit the market because it promised to be a better anticoagulant option, with benefits including:

• Ability to be given in standard dose for most patients
• No need for ongoing monitoring
• No need to make dietary changes
• No need for frequent checkups

Unfortunately, because there is less monitoring with Xarelto, it is easier for problems to begin suddenly and cause a great deal of damage.

Side Effects of Xarelto

Xarelto is known for numerous side effects, ranging from mild to fatal, and including:

• Nausea and vomiting
• Dizziness
• Headache
• Muscle pain
• Decrease in blood pressure
• Swelling or edema
• Unusual bleeding from the nose, eyes, rectum, urinary tract, or genitals
• Unexplained bruising

The most disturbing of Xarelto’s side effects is its ability to trigger uncontrollable bleeding. This is common among all anticoagulants, but the difference with Xarelto is there is no antidote. This means bleeding continues until the medication clears from the user’s system.

The FDA’s concerns about Xarelto were severe enough that it ordered a black box warning for the medication, but the current label addresses only a few side effects, including the risk for clot formation and blood pooling. As of yet there is no warning addressing the risk for bleeding.

Legal Action against the Makers of Xarelto

Bayer faces multiple lawsuits throughout the country regarding Xarelto and its complications. Some of these lawsuits have been filed by survivors of family members who used the drug and died as a result of the complications. There are also accusations that Johnson & Johnson and Bayer were aware of the bleeding risks associated with the drug, but chose not to release the information for fear it would damage sales.
